La letra nos habla de una chica que ve anulada su voluntad por su amante que la domina mientras vive en la noche.Laura Branigan nace en Nueva York (EE.UU.) en 1952 y desde pequeña mostró interés por la música, influenciada por su madre, quien le inculcó el gusto por el canto y la ópera. A principios de los setenta formó parte de la banda de folk rock Meadow pero el proyecto no cuaja y termina como corista de Leonard Cohen . En 1982 publica su álbum debut, Branigan, que contendrá su versión de Gloria de Umberto Tozzi que será un bombazo en todo el mundo llegando a ser TOP2 de Billboard Hot 100 gracias a su poderosa voz y su estilo vocal operístico. Al año siguiente repiten la jugada de adaptar una canción europea, Solitare, en su disco Branigan 2 que contendrá el hit How Am I Supposed To Live Without You. La racha continuará en 1984 con Self Control, que con su versión de Self Control volverá a dominar las listas sobre todo europeas. Un año más tarde está en el apogeo de su fama y Hold Me tendrá grandes ventas aunque sus sencillos no consiguen entrar en las listas generalistas. Sus siguientes discos van perdiendo audiencia y abandona la música para atender el cáncer de su esposo que moriría dos años después. Una serie de accidentes y enfermedades le sumen en una depresión de la que sale actuando en varios musicales. En 2004 fallece a la edad de 52 años debido a un aneurisma cerebral.
